And this is why I hate Miley

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

"You are thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it," Cyrus said. "I didn't even think about it when I did it because that's just me."

So there it is, the confirmation of what many of us knew all along.  I was offended by Miley Cyrus' performance at the VMA Awards for many reasons.  I felt it was vulgar and tasteless and tacky.  But I also felt that it was incredibly "un-artful" and uncaring…and perhaps this was the most insulting of all.

Miley VMASo Miley has now confirmed that she didn't really care, didn't really plan out her performance or work very hard at it.  The whole thing had an air of "winging it," combined with a desperate attempt to try to look sexy (while being incredibly inept at pulling that off in any sort of adult way.)

So the vulgarity aside, it was the lack of caring about the artistry of the performance that really insulted designers like myself.  I have just spent a summer creating marching shows, and I can tell you that I spent countless hours agonizing over every detail of these shows to try to make them as artistic and effective as possible.  We want to thrill audiences and give them a great musical experience.

Every color choice, costume, every single step and posture has carefully been scrutinized.  And I'm not alone.  All over the country there are staff members and designers spending the same time and effort to make something beautiful.  Look at the amazing shows from DCI!  Most people will never know all the time and energy spent considering every detail.

And then we get Miley Cyrus on a world-wide platform, an opportunity to put something musical and entertaining in front of so many people, and she doesn't give it any thought.  Let's read that quote again.

"You are thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it," Cyrus said. "I didn't even think about it when I did it because that's just me."

I guess we can just say that she's a child star who perhaps has had fame come easy, never really has been taught the reasons that art is important or special, and then mix in a bit of white trash upbringing to lower the bar.  And here we are.

So if you've been defending Miley, I must say I'm sorry but I can't follow suit.  I'm insulted as an artist, a performer, and a decent person.  But enough of her….it's time to work on some more show details for this Fall's marching shows.  I will soon be enjoying some clinic rehearsals with many bands I have written for, and I can guarantee that I'll look at those young performers working so hard and "sweating the details" with me on the field and I'll be giving thanks every minute for the chance to make those details matter.
